Simmod Lens New IRND Filters: ARRI Signature and Converted Stills Lenses

Simmod Lens has introduced a new line of Full Spectrum Essence Infrared Neutral Density (IRND) filters designed for ARRI Signature Zooms and Primes, as well as stills lenses that have been adapted using Simmod’s LPL mount conversion kits.

These filters are available in densities ND 0.3, ND 0.6, ND 0.9, ND 1.2, and also in a clear uncoated version.

Advanced Filter Technology

The newly released IRND filters boast the latest in filtration technology, ensuring minimal color shift and maintaining near-perfect skin tones, crucial for high-quality cinematography.

Magnetic Rear Mounting System

Originally launched with rear diffusion options, the LPL Essence Rear Magnetic filter system now includes IRND filters, allowing cinematographers to quickly swap between ND or diffusion filters. This quick-change capability is enabled by a magnetic system that securely snaps filters into place in mere seconds. This system is not only fast but also lighter and more compact compared to traditional screw-on or matte box-mounted systems. It allows the use of a single, small filter size for multiple lenses without the need for bulky matte boxes or multiple step-down rings.

Compatibility and Installation

The Essence filter system is compatible with the magnetic rear mount of ARRI’s Signature series lenses and Simmod’s LPL-converted stills lenses. It involves a magnetic pilot guide ring that attaches to the lens’s rear, onto which the filters are mounted. For use, the standard non-magnetic pilot guide ring must be replaced with the magnetic version. This magnetic pilot facilitates the rapid attachment and detachment of filters.

Design and Features

Each filter is crafted from aircraft-grade aluminum with a knurled edge for secure handling. A total of 12 magnets per ring ensures a firm hold, preventing accidental detachments. Filters also come with individual protective cases for safe storage.

Technical Specifications and Adjustments

The introduction of any filter slightly alters a lens’s back focus, potentially affecting the infinity focus point. To address this, lenses may need to be shimmed for accurate focus calibration. Once shimmed, the lenses can accommodate any of the Essence filters without requiring further adjustment. The Simmod kit includes necessary shims, and additional ones can be purchased for various lens types.

Pricing and Availability

The Simmod Essence IRND filters are priced at $149 USD each, with a full kit of four filters available for $499 USD. These are currently available for purchase on the Simmod Lens website.

Summary

With these innovations, Simmod Lens offers a versatile and efficient solution for cinematographers looking to utilize vintage stills lenses with modern filmmaking technology, providing ease of use and high-quality results at a competitive price.
