InterDigital and Broadpeak Partner to Streamline Volumetric Video Content Delivery

InterDigital, Inc., renowned for its research and development in mobile, video, and AI technologies, alongside Broadpeak, a leader in Content Delivery Network (CDN) and video streaming solutions, have embarked on a joint venture.

This collaboration aims to enhance CDN capabilities for streaming MPEG Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C) immersive content effectively.

Revolutionizing Immersive Content Distribution

Volumetric video, essential for creating and experiencing immersive content, is supported by the MPEG V3C standard. This standard specifies the encoding and streaming methods for volumetric content, which captures 3D representations of real-world scenes or objects. Given its substantial bandwidth demands, the MPEG V3C standard’s compression codecs are crucial for maintaining manageable data rates across the industry. Efficient, V3C-compliant distribution networks are vital for delivering volumetric content to large audiences, a challenge this partnership seeks to address.

Leveraging Research and Expertise

The collaboration will utilize the unique strengths of both companies. InterDigital will bring its V3C end-to-end implementation platform, developed in collaboration with Philips, to the table. Meanwhile, Broadpeak will focus on its expertise in packaging and CDN technology. Their combined efforts aim to showcase and evaluate the effective delivery of immersive media, including presentations at industry trade shows.

Statements from the Companies

Rajesh Pankaj, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at InterDigital, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential to enhance the distribution of immersive content. He highlighted the significance of joint research and collaboration in improving outcomes and efficiency for volumetric content processing.

Guillaume Bichot, Head of Exploration at Broadpeak, emphasized the demand among video service providers for innovative experiences that set them apart, boost Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), and reduce customer churn. He acknowledged the challenge of streaming bandwidth-intensive volumetric content at scale and expressed optimism that the collaboration with InterDigital would improve their Origin-Packager and CDN for streaming standardized V3C content to broader audiences.
