KPBS, the NPR and PBS member station located at San Diego State University, recently undertook a major update of their radio and television facilities.
In collaboration with BeckTV and Lawo, KPBS has revamped their control rooms to adhere to the AES67 standard, transitioning all operations to an all-digital, network-based infrastructure. This standardization allows for more flexible and redundant system configurations.
The renovation included the construction of five new control rooms that connect to corresponding studios, two dual-purpose studio/control rooms, and three announce booths. Lawo provided its expertise by implementing AES67/RAVENNA networking and supplying the radio mixing consoles central to this upgrade.

Integration of Advanced Audio and Communication SystemsThe centerpiece of the upgrade was the replacement of existing audio mixers with Lawo’s diamond radio mixing consoles, enhancing KPBS’s capability to handle networked audio efficiently. Additionally, the AoIP network is now fully integrated with new intercom and telephone systems, which can be managed through the same network.

Tony Staires, Lawo North America’s Sales Director of Audio, also commended the successful management of the project’s complexities and the delivery of a robust networked audio solution.
Television Upgrades and Future-Ready Facilities
Alongside radio improvements, BeckTV also upgraded KPBS’s television production capabilities. This included installing a new TV router, a state-of-the-art broadcast IP network stack, a modern IPTV system, a showcase master control room, an automated TV control room and studio, and a virtual control room with an augmented reality set. These enhancements ensure that KPBS remains at the forefront of broadcasting technology, ready to meet future demands.
