Old Fast Glass Adds Rehoused Phenix 28-70mm T2.7 to Offerings

Old Fast Glass has recently added the Phenix 28-70mm T2.7 to its rental lineup. This lens is a rehoused version of the Tokina 28-70mm F2.8, modified by Iron Glass.

The Phenix lens features a full-frame zoom, maintaining focus across the zoom range, housed in a new, more compact and lightweight cinema casing that measures 110mm at the front and weighs 3.5 lbs.

Enhanced Features

Significant improvements include an expanded focus rotation of 300 degrees for increased accuracy. The original eight-blade iris has been upgraded to a 15-blade circular iris, enhancing the robustness and quality of bokeh. The minimum focusing distance has been reduced to 1 foot 9 inches. It also includes a shimmable stainless steel PL mount and a Cerakoted aluminum exterior.

Optical Design and Comparison

The optical design of the Phenix is identical to that of the Angenieux 28-70 and the Tokina 28-70. It remains uncertain who originally designed these lenses, but evidence strongly suggests that Tokina manufactured all the Angenieux branded 28-70 zoom lenses. The Tokina version was selected for the Phenix Project due to its higher availability and ease of procurement.

Performance and Aesthetic

The Phenix 28-70mm is noted for its sharp imaging capabilities with minimal chromatic aberration. While there is some focus falloff at the edges, it is not considered distracting. The lens produces textured bokeh and attractive lens flares, making it compatible with many vintage prime lenses from brands such as Canon FD, Minolta Rokkor, Leica R, Nikon, and Konica.

Technical Challenges and Solutions

Rehousing the Tokina 28-70mm is notably difficult due to its complex internal structure involving 16 elements in 12 groups and up to five different moving parts. Iron Glass engineer Evgeniy Dulin designed a cam type system specifically for this rehousing, ensuring professional performance without compromise.

Pricing and Purchase Information

The Phenix 28-70mm T2.7 is available for purchase from Ancient Optics at a price of $13,500 USD. A 50% deposit is required at the time of order, and delivery is expected within 3-6 months.
