GL OPTICS Rubin 1: Historic Soviet Lens Updated for Modern Cinema

GL OPTICS has rejuvenated the Rubin 1 37-80mm FF Zoom lens, originally the first Soviet photographic zoom lens and a component of the Zenit 6 camera kit.

This lens has been rehoused to meet modern cinematography standards while preserving its historical essence.

Technical Specifications

The updated Rubin 1 maintains its original optical formula with 14 elements arranged in 11 groups. It features a front size of 136mm and boasts a parfocal design that maintains focus throughout the zoom range. Key upgrades include an improved close focus capability of up to 3 feet, a PL mount that is interchangeable, and a new round iris for smoother bokeh effects. The lens also incorporates an inner focus mechanism to prevent the front from rotating and is relatively lightweight at 8 pounds.

Historical Significance

Originally accompanying the Zenit-6, the top model of its line, the Rubin-1 lens featured prominently in the 1968 Soviet film ‘Zigzag of Success.’ It symbolized the aspirations of the protagonist, Oreshnikov, who dreams of becoming a journalist. This camera series was among the most ambitious photographic projects in the USSR at the time.

Design Inspiration

The Rubin 1 drew loose inspiration from the Voigtländer Zoomar, designed by Dr. Frank G. Back for motion pictures and known as the first successful zoom lens for 35mm film. While both lenses share a 14-element configuration in 11 groups, their internal element positioning and zoom mechanics differ significantly, with the Zoomar offering a slightly wider zoom range from 36mm to 82mm.

Availability and Pricing

The modernized GL OPTICS Rubin 1 37-80mm FF Zoom lens is now available for purchase, priced at $7,500 USD. This lens merges historical design with contemporary functionality, catering to both film enthusiasts and professional cinematographers.
