Dream Chip, a leading manufacturer of miniature cameras, in collaboration with their German distributor Teltec, recently finalized the sale and installation of 14 AtomOne mini zoom cameras for Riot Games.

This was part of Riot Games’ transformation of the LEC studio into a dedicated, diversified eSports venue, now known as the ‘Riot Games Arena’.

Project implementation timeframe

The new arena, which continues to host the League of Legends EMEA championship, now aims to emphasize the growth of other eSports titles like VALORANT and TeamFight Tactics. Completed in 2024, the concept was initially proposed in September 2022, with NIYU entrusted to provide a turnkey solution. Collaborating with two other companies, NIYU began implementation in April 2023, and the inaugural games were held in January 2024.

Site requirements

Expanding the venue to accommodate new gaming tournaments required a flexible setup capable of quickly adjusting to the specific logistics of each tournament’s format. While the arena can accommodate 210 live spectators, the primary focus has been on creating an immersive experience for online viewers. Additionally, providing exceptional facilities for competitors ensures they can fully concentrate on their performance while allowing fans access to their favorite competitors and teams behind the scenes and in real-time.

Stadium cameras

For this reason, Dream Chip was chosen as one of the POV camera suppliers for the stadium, providing a total of 14 miniature cameras, with ten operating at any given time to capture competitors directly as they game. This was not a simple task. Due to the proximity of the cameras to the gamers and their tendency to move significantly within a close-angle frame, keeping the gamers constantly in frame can be challenging.

AtomOne Mini-Zoom Cameras: The Ideal Discreet Solution for Broadcasting

Conventional PTZ cameras were deemed too bulky, slow, and intrusive for the application. AtomOne mini zoom cameras were chosen precisely for their discreet nature. Measuring just 600mm x 85mm and weighing 267g, the camera could be discreetly mounted on custom-made PSUs, positioned to the side of each competitor’s monitor. These were then connected to a single under-desk connection point that feeds back to the main rack in the control room. These under-desk connections were designed to be detachable for flexible configuration of the competitor stage layout as needed.

Delivering Broadcast-Quality Imagery: Dream Chip’s AtomOne Mini Zoom Cameras

In addition to the physical requirements of discreet placement and flexible deployment, the technical image quality was also a critical factor. Despite eSports audiences typically accessing content through non-conventional channels, they still expect broadcast-quality imagery. Dream Chip’s AtomOne mini zoom cameras deliver precisely this, despite their compact size. With full HD resolution, a 1/2.5” sensor, a wide-angle lens ranging from 120° to 40°, and full HDR capability (HLG, PQ, and SLOG3), the AtomOne mini zoom meets all the quality expectations of a broadcast camera.
